FEEL THE POSE - MINI COURSE IN Figure DRAWING

 7 LESSONS……. Self - PACED

Figure study in watercolour. One of many demo’s on this course.

Do you remember the joy you got from drawing yourself, your family, your friends, as a child? You were not worried about the anatomical accuracy of the face or body, you were telling a story. The human body is a joy to draw and paint when you approach it with a sense of childlike curiosity and wonder, and avoid getting too caught up in realism.

Join me as I teach you how to engage your senses during the creative process, just like you did as a child. Together we will create a series of expressive mixed media figure drawings.
Using simple materials – charcoal, ink, watercolors etc; and several exciting and very specific exercises, you will be empowered to draw the figure with confidence. and above all, with feeling. I will also show you how Master artists use these exact same techniques that I will share with you, to create figure drawings that are deeply engaging and full of life.

You can expect to come away from this Ecourse with several rewarding ways to distill and capture the essence of the human body on paper, and a portfolio of figure drawings that might just surprise you!

*This course is suitable for all levels from the total beginner, to college graduates looking for a fresh approach.

COURSE CONTENT

LESSON 1 – locating negative space

This lesson is designed to really help you to see negative space really clearly. Give what I show you here, a bit of practice and your figure drawing will surprise you in a good way!

LESSON 2 – CONTOUR DRAWING

In a nutshell, figure contour drawing is capturing the figure through a line drawing. That’s what w will explore in this lesson.

LESSON 3 – The Gesture

Whereas with contour drawing you draw bit by bit, and arrive at the whole, with gesture drawing, you must see the whole first, and then place marks rapidly on your paper to capture the pose. The gesture is the most important one to really grasp for figure drawing

LESSON 4 – The figure in WATERCOLOUR 1

I bring out my watercolors, when time is limited and I want to work quickly. They are so easy to set up and take with me when I travel, and I get great figure practice with the lessons I am sharing with you in this lesson, and the next one. Watercolor is so fluid that it is a great medium to use for figure gestures .

LESSON 5 - The figure in WATERCOLOUR 2

You can also bring colour into the mix easily with watercolor, and if you are a painter, color is key. In this lesson we use more colour and play more with yesterday’s pose. I have a very irreverent attitude towards watercolor by the way. I use them freely and heavily saturated when I want, and use white watercolor paint whenever I feel like it. I am not alone in this. Many of the watercolor masters like John Singer Sargent, used watercolours in a very loose way, and did not solely use the white of the page to suggest light.

LESSON 6 - THE FIGURE IN CHARCOAL AND PASTEL

Pastel is another terrific way of adding colour to our drawings, which we will explore in this lesson..
It works really well with charcoal too as you will see! I use unison pastels in this lesson, as described in the materials overview. Pastels are one material that I advise you to spend a bit of money on. The cheap ones are very chalky, and will frustrate you no end. I used them as a student, and they turned me off pastels for years!

LESSON 7 - BIG FIGURE IN MIXED MEDIA

It’s time now to put all what we have learned into a big mixed media drawing/painting of the figure!
I keep the palette very simple to allow you to focus on the drawing more.
